Welcome to a quiet corner of the blog
From the Writer's Desk is a space where I step back from our formal topic highlights to share a few candid, unhurried reflections right from where I sit. It's an open invitation to pull up a chair, pause for a moment with a warm drink, and connect on a personal level.
When I speak with clients about incorporating clinical hypnotherapy into their well-being—whether for stress, anxiety, personal growth, or menopause support—I often notice a quiet beat of hesitation. Behind that pause, there is almost always a very reasonable question—one that doesn't always get asked out loud right away: "Is it mind control?"
It is a completely natural concern. Pop culture, television, and stage performances have often focused on theatrical aspects of hypnosis—leaving many of us with images of swinging pocket watches or people losing their sense of agency for dramatic effect. If clinical hypnotherapy were anything like those performance myths, it wouldn't have a place in my practice.
Sitting here at my desk today, I wanted to take a moment to share a clear, honest reflection on what therapeutic hypnosis truly is, what it isn't, and why it forms such a gentle, effective foundation for mind-body well-being.
Clearing Away the Myths
To feel completely safe entering a therapeutic space, it helps to separate stage performance from clinical care:
- It IS NOT mind control: No one can hypnotise you against your will, nor can anyone make you say or do anything that goes against your core values.
- It IS NOT deep sleep or unconsciousness: You are not "out cold." You remain aware of my voice, the room around you, and your own thoughts throughout.
- It IS NOT a magic fix or trick: It is an evidence-based therapy, mind-body approach supported by clinical research.¹
- You CANNOT get "stuck" in hypnosis: Because you are simply in a state of deep, natural focus, you can open your eyes and return to full alertness whenever you choose.
What Hypnotherapy Actually Feels Like
If you have ever been so absorbed in a captivating book that you lost track of time, or driven a familiar route home while your mind wandered peacefully, you have already experienced a natural hypnotic state. In clinical practice, hypnosis is simply a state of focused, peaceful relaxation. When we lower the volume of the outside world and quiet the analytical, hyper-vigilant part of our mind, our autonomic nervous system gets a chance to pause. In this calm, receptive space, your subconscious mind becomes far more open to positive suggestions, soothing imagery, and new ways of responding to physical stress.¹
Applying Clinical Hypnotherapy to Menopause Care
While clinical hypnotherapy is a versatile tool for many areas of emotional and physical health, it forms a particularly gentle pillar of our HypnoMenopause® framework.
Having navigated my own journey through perimenopause, these aren't just clinical insights to me—I know firsthand how disorienting those moments of uncertainty can feel, and how vulnerable it can be to explore new support when your body and mind already feel unfamiliar.
During perimenopause and menopause, our nervous system can feel like it is on high alert. Sudden temperature surges, disrupted sleep, or unexpected anxiety can trigger an automatic "alarm response" in the body.²
Through HypnoMenopause®, we integrate clinical hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and mindfulness to:
- Soothe the Alarm Reflex: Communicating a deep sense of safety to the brain's thermoregulatory center to help ease hot flushes and night sweats.¹
- Reframe Internal Tension: Gently help unhooking from the middle-of-the-night worry that keeps you awake when sleep is disrupted.²
- Reclaim Internal Control: Reminding your mind and body that you are safe, grounded, and in control—even as internal rhythms evolve.
- The Core Truth: All hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis. I do not "do" hypnotherapy to you. Instead, I act as a quiet, skilled guide holding space while you access your body's innate ability to settle and restore balance.
